\nThis is the website I got some of the words from. I chose some basic words like "love" "family" "heart" because I figured that the translations would be easier. I also chose some more advanced words, but I think that most of them should transfer well. Either way, I think that students should be required to use at least two Spanish Valentine's day words in their valentines, or make two valentines each using a Spanish word.
\nLet me know what you guys think and if you need me to pull my weight in another area :)

Since I am most interested in teaching middle school I think that cooperative activities, like group projects, are a great way foster the social growth that goes on at that age. According to the research in chapter 3, some good activities to do with middle school aged students are ones that promote Formal Operational Throught. The book suggests cooperative learning and pairing students who are more advanced in some areas with students that have other sets of skills. This teaches students about working together and finding out how to obtain common goals, regardless of differences. Two other types of activities the book suggests are mock trials and classroom debates. Through having a class discuss their differing opinions in a safe forum, they can devlop their own theories and learn to tolerate and honor the theories\/opinions of others. Personally, I would like to do literature circles with my future class. I think that this is a good way to incorporate the elements of cooperation and healthy discussion\/debate into an English Language Arts environment :)","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"34589752","body":"For some reason I randomly find your posts but when I am looking for them I can't. I just saw this now and wondered why no one had posted anything yet. Are you making new pages, and the pages are discussion topics? I even try looking at "Recent Changes". Where are we supposed to put our lesson plan for Valentine's Day? I have a lot of information but don't know where I should put it :\/
\n
\nAnyway, I agree with you that for middle schoolers it is wise to use group projects, as long as there are different parts and each person is responsible for a chunk of the activity. Otherwise, I feel like students wait until someone else does it. Also, there should always be a peer grading system or something that asks each person individually how each group member interacted and helped throughout the project.
\n
\nFor me, I would like to teach high school. I think that Formal Operational Thought works well with older students too. I hope to have mock trials for government classes and debates about certain laws as well. I would like to do fun activities like creating their own law, and have a time limit for students to get as many classmates to sign off on it as possible. Then have an open class discussion on how it felt to be rushed, what types of laws others liked, if there were any double signatures, and compare how what we did relates to a real bill getting passed.","dateCreated":"1298318824","smartDate":"Feb 21, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"ArielleC13","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/ArielleC13","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"34872446","body":"Monique- I completely agree with you. I think children and adolescents learn best when they can work in groups, or as a class as a whole. It not only opens their minds up to others opinions, but gives them more opportunities to learn new ways of thinking, learning, and viewpoints. I think keeping our lesson, at least in the beginning as a group discussion and the option to have the students work in groups throughout the lesson, will allow the Formal Operational Thought Theory to be followed. I have actually done literature circles before in a creative writing class I took, and I really enjoyed them. being able to hear what other people thought enabled me to bring in many different opinions into my own. It was a lot of fun :-)
\n
\nArielle- I think this discussion can only be seen on the lesson plan page, whereas our other discussions can be found on the home page. So when we have discussions on the finals page, it will be a seperate discussion for that page as well. I hope that helps a bit. I think you make a wonderful point that when working in groups, some students will need to be assigned parts for the activity, if that is what the activity calls for. Having group or peer reviews is a good way for the teacher to see how the group interacted and got their work done, without the teachers inlfuence. However, I think that if you plan on giving them back to the students then the review should remain anonymous of the reviewer.","dateCreated":"1298669354","smartDate":"Feb 25, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"Mpascale1","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Mpascale1","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}}],"more":0}]}],"more":false},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
